Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a manual treatment approach that can help to alleviate pain in the body. It focuses on the connection between the body’s structure and function and recognises that much of the pain, disability and illness we suffer comes from a breakdown in this relationship.

Osteopathic treatment restores function to the body’s mechanics to allow it to work efficiently and help prevent further injuries or wear and tear occurring. Osteopathy also helps ensure the body’s internal systems are working effectively by supporting optimal function of the nerves, lymphatics and circulation.

Conditions that respond well to osteopathic treatment include:

  • generalised aches and pains
  • joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis as an adjunct to core OA treatments and exercise
  • arthritic pain
  • acute & chronic back pain
  • neck pain
  • jaw pain and dysfunction
  • headache arising from the neck (cervicogenic) / migraine prevention
  • frozen shoulder
  • tennis elbow
  • circulatory problems
  • cramping
  • digestion problems
  • joint pains
  • lumbago
  • sciatica
  • muscle spasms
  • neuralgia
  • fibromyalgia
  • inability to relax
  • rheumatic pain
  • minor sports injuries and tensions

After an initial medical history and structural examination to help determine the cause of the problem, your treatment may include:

  • Osteopathic techniques such as soft tissue massage, stretching, ligament and fascial release, muscle energy techniques, joint manipulation and mobilisation, craniosacral and visceral techniques
  • Advice on posture, ergonomics and nutrition
  • Stretching and specific rehabilitation exercises
